Kallar Kahar’s history began in 1519 AD when the Mughal Emperor Zaheer ud Din Babur discovered Kallar Kahar when he crossed the Indus River over from Kabul on his way to Delhi. The beauty and serenity of the lake awed him, especially the Kallar Kahar Lake. The water that gushes from natural spring formed Kallar Kahar Lake. He stayed at Kallar Kahar and camped there.
Near the lake, Zaheer ud Din Babur laid the foundation of the first Mughal garden in South Asia called ‘Bagh-i-Safa’ where the fruit trees can be seen on the southwestern shore. In the middle of the garden, the emperor had a stone constructed where he stood to address his army. This historical site is known as Takht-i-Babri. Kallar Kahar is situated 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from the city of Chakwal, in District Chakwal.
This location is renowned for its Kallar Kahar Lake, Takht-e-Babri, and exquisite peacock species. This lake is a saltwater lake that is located at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level, with an area of 8 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 4-5 feet. When going from Kabul to assault Delhi with his army, the renowned Mughal emperor Zahir-ud-Din Babar encamped in Kallar Kahar. During his stay, a large rock was carved into a throne from which he addressed his soldiers. Later, the throne became known as Takht-e-Babri. It remains in Kallar Kahar and serves as a renowned tourist destination. Bagh-e-Safa is a supposedly Babar-planted garden. Babar described Kallar Kahar as a “charming spot with good air” and a site of natural beauty.
